Lot 130 : Very Rare Bontems Triple Singing Birds Automaton
We sold this lot for £3,700 in August 2017

this large and impressive piece is the most complex and luxurious model made by Bontems for their wealthiest clients to entertain guests in the drawing rooms of the grandest of houses. Triple birds rarely come to market, and this example has the more sought-after octagonal base with extra gilded decorations. It has recently had a complete internal restoration by Max Plumber (the Music Box Society's recommended restorer of singing birds), which included the recovering of the huge bellows and checking the animation of all 3 birds. The exterior of the cage is in lovely untouched original condition, and the song is superb. The last similar triple birds (although on the more common standard base) to go through auction we can find was sold by Christies in 2010 for £9,000. This example is offered without reserve, presenting a unique opportunity to acquire a superb piece of French clockwork automata.
