Lot 95 : 1949 Lang Wheels Metal Body Dodgem Car
We sold this lot for £5,050 in November 2015

this stunning dodgem car was bought by Dave Hooper from the Brillscote Farm Auction way back in the late 80's. It then spent a good deal of time at Supercar in Warwick being subjected to a no-expense-spared full restoration. Unfortunately, someone forgot to measure the width of their front door until the dodgem was looking resplendent in its new paint and shiny chrome, and it didn't fit through the doors of the Hoopers' house! - So the car then resided for a while on display in their famous antiques shop in Regent Street here in Leamington Spa, whereupon countless people tried to buy it!

We eventually sold this car for the Hoopers over 20 years ago, in March 1995, at an auction just around the corner from the Elephant House in the rather lovely old Gor-Ray factory. The dodgem car didn't go far, as the owner of the Gor-Ray factory fell in love with it and successfully bid for it for his private collection.

Move on again a few years and the dodgem's owner sold the Gor-Ray factory and bought and restored The Assembly - the multi-award winning music and events venue here in Leamington Spa, and the dodgem car found pride of place in the 'green room' of The Assembly, where literally hundreds of music stars and other celebrities have enjoyed posing in it for a picture or two.

Now the car has come full circle back to us again to find another new owner. With all those famous bums having sat in it, no doubt enjoying a drink or two and the odd sausage roll, the car has gained a few paint chips over the last 25 years since restoration, but that has actually mellowed it down nicely, and it displays fabulously. It rolls around easily on its own wheels, and with full steering lock it turns on its own axis, so very easy to position.

Metal-body dodgem cars are very hard to find now, and are often so rotten and rusty that you end up virtually building a new one from scratch. As can be seen from the original photo Dave Hooper has managed to find for us that he took at the auction 25 years ago, this car was in very solid condition to start with.

The lines and curves of this car are just gorgeous, the back end even more curvy than the front - and remember all these lovely curves were hand made in thick sheet steel by very skilled panel beaters. What on earth would it cost to build one like that today?!

The car is here offered with no reserve. Someone will be taking it home. It may well be another 20 years before we see such a stylish dodgem car again, so don't miss this opportunity... you'll regret it if you do!
